Annual Wellness Exams
An annual wellness exam is a great way to learn about potential health issues and steps you can take to care for yourself. Medicare and medical plans compliant with the Affordable Care Act allow patients at least one free annual wellness exam per year. During your wellness exam, your physician at Golden Apple Medicine will go over your medical and family history, as well as your current prescriptions and health care providers. Height, weight, blood pressure, and other measurements will be taken. As a part of the examination, your internal medicine provider will offer personalized health advice, as well as information related to any risk factors and treatments pertinent to your health condition.
Individuals entering the healthcare workforce or other industries may be required to undergo an employment health screening. Golden Apple Medicine offers comprehensive employment screenings. These screenings typically focus on updating required vaccines.
During a vision checkup, your provider may examine the eye, pupil and red reflex. If any problems are identified, you may be referred to an ophthalmologist for further care. Eyesight often changes as we age (or during pregnancy). Farsightedness (difficulty reading materials up close or working on the computer) is the most common problem developed by adults between the ages of 41 and 60.
According to The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, “More than 30% of people over age 65 have some type of hearing loss [and] 14% of those between 45 and 64 have hearing loss.” If you feel you are not hearing as well as you should, scheduling a hearing test with your provider could help identify a problem and present a course of correction. Initial hearing tests can be simple; they may involve listening to a series of tones or identifying a few spoken words. In many cases, minor hearing impairment is often caused by wax buildup in the ear. This can be addressed in your checkup or wellness exam.
Nutrition & Exercise Counseling
Did you know that the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise? Or that the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recommends individuals “consume less than 10 percent of calories per day from added sugars?” During a nutrition and exercise counseling session, your health care provider at Golden Apple Medicine will review your current habits and provide suggestions for how you can improve or begin new nutrition and exercise routines.
BMI & Body Fat Analysis
BMI (body mass index) is a key indicator health professionals use for understanding a patient’s health conditions and risks. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) over your height (in centimeters). A patient who is 5’ 3” and weighs 125 lbs., for example, would have a BMI of 22.7. A healthy BMI is considered to be between 18.5 and 24.9 for both men and women of all body types. A BMI in the 25.0 – 29.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 30.0 or more is considered obese. Your internal medicine physician at Golden Apple can perform a BMI and body fat analysis, and provide guidance in next steps if any lifestyle changes need to be made.
Dermatology & Skin Cancer Screening
From bumps and moles to precancerous spots, the health care team at Golden Apple Medicine can evaluate and treat a wide range of skin issues. Skin cancer screening is especially important for patients in the West Valley, where the sun’s intense rays can cause serious damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.” Because of skin cancer’s prevalence (especially in Arizona), regular screening and evaluation of questionable spots is highly recommended. Immunizations & Vaccinations
Golden Apple Medicine offers comprehensive immunization and vaccination services for adults throughout Goodyear, Arizona. Several vaccines, such as the tetanus vaccine, must be updated throughout adulthood. Additionally, the seasonal flu shot is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for most individuals over the age of six months. For an up-to-date adult immunization schedule, see this resource page from the Centers for Disease Control.
Blood Pressure Check
A blood pressure check is a simple test used to determine how much pressure is on the arteries as the heart pumps blood. In order to take the measurement, your health care provider places an inflatable cuff around the arm and records your pulse. This test is recommended at least once every two years for adults age 18 to 40 and once every year for adults age 40 and older (as well as younger adults who are at risk for high blood pressure). A blood pressure check is primarily used to screen for heart disease and stroke. However, the test may also be recommended for patients with prehypertension, hypertension, hypotension, and other cardiovascular-related conditions. Blood pressure results have a “top number” (systolic pressure) and “bottom number” (diastolic pressure). Normal blood pressure is generally considered anything below 120/80.
Cholesterol Level Evaluation
A cholesterol level evaluation can tell your internal medicine doctor at Golden Apple if you are at risk for having plaque buildup in your arteries, which leads to atherosclerosis (arterial blockage). High cholesterol levels may indicate risk for heart attack, stroke, and other health problems. A full cholesterol evaluation provides information about four types of fats (lipids) in your blood: (1) total cholesterol, (2) HDL cholesterol, (3) LDL cholesterol and (4) triglycerides. Adults age 18 and older at normal risk levels for heart disease should have a cholesterol level evaluation once every five years.
A glucose check – or “blood sugar test” – is done as part of screening for (and monitoring) diabetes. Patients with diabetes who are under the age of 60 and have no other health issues are generally recommended to have target blood sugar levels between 80 and 120 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Patients age 60 and older, as well as those with related medical conditions, are recommended to maintain levels between 100 and 140 mg/dL. Glucose checks can be done at home. Cardiovascular assessment is a service offered at Golden Apple Medicine for patients who are at risk for or known to have heart disease or other cardiovascular health issues. An assessment may include observation of breathing patterns and rib movements, feeling pulses in several of the body’s main arteries, and listening to the heartbeat through a stethoscope. There are a number of tests that have been shown in multiple studies to reduce deaths from cancer. These include colonoscopy, mammography, Pap tests and HPV testing, and other routine tests. Your internal medicine physician at Golden Apple can discuss the appropriate tests for you, given your age, family history, health condition, and other factors, as recommended by nationally-recognized standards. For more information about pre-cancerous screenings, contact us.
Many Americans take multiple prescriptions. In many cases, these prescriptions are written by different doctors for different health conditions. Sometimes, patients are even filling prescriptions that were originally written years ago, but are no longer the best option for them today. At Golden Apple Medicine, patients have the opportunity to receive personalized prescription management services. Prescription management helps ensure the health and safety of the patient, while also reducing costs that may be associated with prescribing unnecessary drugs.
